Child abuse is a heinous crime that must be condemned by all members of society. It is especially disturbing when a teacher, who is entrusted with the education and well-being of their students, is the perpetrator of such abuse. In the case of Malcampo-Repollo, Maximo Estrella Elementary School teacher, her physical maltreatment of her minor student is a clear act of child abuse that violates essential elements of Republic Act No. 7610.
Although the law does not necessitate the deliberate intention to lower, diminish, or belittle a child’s inherent value and worth as a person in cases of child abuse, it is crucial to recognize that any type of physical or emotional abuse can significantly harm a child’s growth and welfare. This is why it is crucial for schools to implement strict policies and guidelines to prevent and address cases of child abuse.
As a School Principal and Attorney, I strongly recommend that schools provide training and education to teachers and staff on child protection and safety. This will help them identify and prevent any form of abuse and ensure that they are equipped to handle such cases. Schools should establish reporting mechanisms for suspected cases of abuse and conduct regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure compliance with these policies.
It is also important to work closely with parents and guardians to construct a safe and nurturing setting for children in school and at home. It includes promoting positive discipline practices, encouraging open communication, and providing support to children who may have experienced abuse or trauma.
In conclusion, we must all prioritize the safety and well-being of children and work together to prevent and address cases of abuse. Let us not hesitate to report any suspected cases of child abuse and make sure that justice is served for the victims.
